Projection

Very early on I thought it'd be fun to do a piece where a 3D creature was imitating a 2D creature. I wanted there to be an extra layer to it, where the viewer is aware of the true nature of the mimic, but the 2D character aren't. Similar to the feeling of us, as humans, watch a bunch of small fish get eaten by an anglerfish. The little fish don't know that the "light" is actually a mimic! But we know.
I was originally going to make the 3D mimic be more of an anglerfish type creature made out of clay and/or cardboard luring in some unexpected 2D critters with a light projection that looks like a friend. After realizing that was wayyy too complicated, I ended up repurposing one of those pose-able art dummie. It had been collecting dust on my shelf for years so I think it was about time it actually got put to use in art (because lets be so real they are not that good as pose references). I still liked the idea of doing an anglerfish-esque "light" mimic, so I had the projection be of one of those generic bathroom stall/warning sign/walking signal guys. The art dummy and the generic signage dude are some of the most well-know symbols for "human" while both being extremely nondescript and stiff to the point that they would probably be terrifying if they actually sprung to life. It felt appropriate for the theme.
Most of the piece was made using random stuff I found around my house. The only real "art supplies" I used were the colored pencils to draw the 2D guys and the pencil. The rest is office supplies! The art dummy is "holding" the pencil with a combination of a rubber band and a clothespin keeping it in place. The orange guy was cut out of some of those translucent folder-divider-thingies you probably have in your binders. Even the "easel" is a mimic; it's just a picture frame (holder?) meant to look like the easel #myartissolayeredandcomplexandthematicallysound
